FTI Technology, a business segment of FTI Consulting Inc., today launched its Information Governance and Compliance service group. The new offering provides consultations with corporations to help marshal people and develop processes to create or augment the companies' information governance programs.

The new IGC service aims to cut storage costs, reduce risk, secure data and improve e-discovery processes. Methods include providing insight into data and helping the companies incorporate litigation processes as repeatable business processes.

Jake Frazier, a new senior managing director at FTI Technology, leads IGC. He previously worked as a practice leader at Information Lifecycle Governance group at International Business Machines Corp.

Frazier told LTN that the IGC group will first target “low-hanging fruit” that can be building blocks to a larger infogov framework. Offerings include:

  • -Scan and quarantine sensitive data such as personally identifiable information and trade secrets.
  • -Clean up file shares using retention policies and legal hold information.
  • -Data segregation.
  • -E-discovery process improvement.
  • -Decommission and defensibly dispose of obsolete business applications

Among the first services will be the ability to separate organizational information from processes to reduce risk from third-party subpoenas. The team will also help users review and refine corporate e-discovery processes—from identifying relevant documents and custodians, to legal holds and litigation risk, to preservation, collection, data analysis and review.

Decommissioning and disposing of business applications will include migrating data to new applications, he said. And by defensibly deleting data, the organization is no longer required to maintain for business or litigation requirements, Frazier explained.

FTI expects to follow up in the spring and early summer with more services focused on finding facts fast to help with investigations, such as those brought under the auspices of financial reform and Dodd-Frank.

“Analytics is key” to accomplish IGC services, said Frazier, singling out FTI’s Ringtail technology. But the group will capitalize on appropriate tools and applicable software licensed by organizations, he said.

On Tuesday, Feb. 3, from 3:45 to 5 p.m., Frazier will moderate a panel at LegalTech New York, “Killing Two Birds With One Stone: Optimizing Information Governance for Easier E-Discovery,” sponsored by FTI. The panel will discuss how to protect sensitive customer data from cyberthreats and comply with data privacy laws. Participants include Michael Lisi, director of litigation support at Fidelity Investments; Rachel Rubenson, vice president and global e-discovery counsel at Barclays; and Joseph Steffan, chief privacy compliance officer at Morgan Stanley. ALM's LTNY will be held at the New York Hilton Midtown, Feb. 2-5.

Frazier is based in Austin, and earned his J.D. at Arizona State College of Law and an MBA from the University of Texas at Dallas.

FTI Consulting is a global business consulting firm with more than 4,200 employees in 26 countries. FTI’s consultants work in investigations, litigation, mergers and acquisitions, regulatory issues, reputation management, and corporate communications and restructuring.
